The Chicago Democratic Socialists of America is praising members of the Chicago City Council Democratic Socialist Caucus.

The larger Democratic Socialists of America has received vociferous criticism for its support of Hamas militants.

“We reject a resolution passed today by the City Council which unequivocally supports the actions of the Israeli state without any recognition of the humanity and oppression of the Palestinian people, especially as Israel stands poised to destroy Gaza and indiscriminately kill Gaza residents in an unprecedented ground invasion. There is no justification for violence against civilians, and there is no justification for collective punishment and apartheid,” the Chicago Democratic Socialists of America said on Facebook.

“In this moment, we must be bold in our calls for peace and the deescalation of an already horrific crisis. We thank DSA members Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez 25th Ward and 33rd Ward Alderwoman Rossana Rodríguez for their brave floor speeches against the resolution.”

Chicago City Council Democratic Socialist Caucus members Daniel la Spata, Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez, Byron Sigcho Lopez, Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and Jeannette Taylor have thus far refused to renounce the group’s support of Hamas.

“They can disavow the hateful message of their national organization, but thus far have either remained silent or posted support. This is not a situation where moral equivalency holds. There is no justification for the brutal images and videos we have all seen. None,” Stuart Loren said of the group on X.

Congressman Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) notably dropped out of the Democratic Socialists of America after the group tipped its support for Hamas terrorists who killed over 1,300 in an Oct. 7 attack.

“Today, I am officially renouncing my membership in the Democratic Socialists of America,” Thanedar said in an announcement noting his resignation from the group.

“After the brutal terrorist attacks on Israel, which included the indiscriminate murder, rape, and kidnapping of innocent men, women, and children, I can no longer associate with an organization unwilling to call out terrorism in all its forms. Sunday’s hate-filled and antisemitic rally in New York City, promoted by the NYC-DSA, makes it impossible for me to continue my affiliation. I stand with Israel and its right to defend itself. There is no place for moral equivocation in the face of unadulterated evil as we have seen from Hamas.”

“I will continue to work toward the goals that brought me to Congress in the first place: universal healthcare, workers’ rights, strong labor unions, equity for communities of color, environmental justice, and compassionate immigration. My ideals have not changed at all. I strongly believe that ending my association with DA serves my constituents’ interests as they expect me to represent them by helping to build a better, more just world, not fanning the flames of hatred.”

Public recently explored the shift in support for Hamas among some segments of the radical Left, attributing it to a perceived sense of privilege, coddling, and narcissism, marking a departure from their historical stance on peace and anti-militarism.

There have been many noted instances of left-wing organizations endorsing Hamas’ terrorist actions, illustrating a change in their approach to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
