In the first round of the Illinois High School Football Association (IHSA) playoffs, the 22 Chicago Public Schools who played non-CPS opponents went 0-22 and were outscored by a total of 916 points-- 152 touchdowns.
All told, in the 22 games, CPS teams lost by a collective 1,079 to 63.
Losses included previously undefeated Walter Payton Grizzlies (9-0), anointed as the top seed in Class 5A by the IHSA, which only considers record and not strength of schedule in seeding teams.
The Grizzlies lost to 4-5 Sterling H.S. 50-0; the game was 43-0 at halftime and had a running clock in the second half.
The Lake View H.S., Wildcats the IHSA-named second seed in Class 6A, lost 49-6 to the 5-4 Lake Forest Scouts.
Lake View trailed 42-0 at halftime; its game also had a running clock.
That wasn't the worst of it.
In Class 5A, Lindblom trailed Carmel 48-0 at halftime. It lost, 69-14.
In Class 6A, Hubbard trailed Oak Lawn Richards 49-0 at halftime. It lost 55-7.
In Class 4A, Phoenix Military Academy trailed 55-0 at halftime to Wheaton Academy. It lost 68-0.
In Class 3A, Noble/Hansberry trailed 58-0 at halftime to top-seeded Byron. It lost 72-0.
A top team in CPS, Kenwood Academy, which boasts top college recruits I’Marion Stewart (Michigan) and Marquise Lightfoot (Miami, Fla.) was blown out by Downers Grove North, 42-13.
Two CPS schools did advance to the second round, beating other CPS teams.
In Class 5A, Morgan Park defeated Corliss 34-13; it hosts Sycamore in Round 2.
In Class 4A, top-seeded Dyett defeated Agricultural Science, 28-16. It hosts Sandwich in Round 2.
In the past three seasons, CPS has a 7-70 IHSA playoff record against non-CPS opponents. Its teams have been outscored by 2,760 points-- by 460 touchdowns-- 3,196-436.
Since 2013, CPS is 40-174 in the IHSA playoffs against non-CPS opponents.
Of the 40 wins, 22 were by Phillips, which won state titles in 2015 (4A) and 2017 (5A) and lost in the state final in 2014 (4A).
Six of the 40 were by Simeon, which made the 6A quarterfinals in 2018.
In seven IHSA appearances since 2013, Lincoln Park is winless and has been outscored 265-50.
Mather (0-4) has been outscored 182-6. Payton (0-8) has been outscored 396-132.
The IHSA expanded to eight classes, from six, in 2001.
