Amid the increasing migration of Venezuelans to the United States, Chicago City Council member La Spata has attributed the surge of illegal aliens to the pitfalls of capitalism.
“Such a pitiful scarcity mindset in the City Council. Well played capitalism, well played,” La Spata said on X.
La Spata is a member of the Chicago City Council Democratic Socialist Caucus along with Byron Sigcho Lopez, Rossana Rodriguez Sanchez, Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and Jeannette Taylor.
Venezuelans are increasingly making the perilous journey to the United States, with hundreds of thousands arriving at the U.S. border over the last two years.
The New York Times reports the migration wave is driven by a combination of factors, primarily stemming from a decade-long economic and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.
Socialist policies – such as those promoted by La Sapta et al – enacted by Hugo Chavez and his successor Nicolás Maduro devastated the South American country’s economy have led to despondency in the Venezuelan population.
Subsequent to the enactment of socialism, Venezuelans have been grappling with years of economic hardship, mismanagement of the oil sector and devastating living conditions, making the search for better prospects and sanctuary for their families a compelling reason to migrate.
Due to ongoing economic and political turmoil more than 7 million Venezuelans have fled for the country since 2015, according to Immigration Forum.
This makes the Venezuelan exodus the world's second-largest refugee crisis according to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
The exodus has been driven by a combination of factors, including a decade-long economic crisis, deteriorating living conditions and increasing global policies that have failed to alleviate the situation in Venezuela.
These factors, coupled with economic mismanagement and sanctions that led to an economic catastrophe, have prompted many Venezuelans to seek sanctuary for their families and asylum in the United States.
