Ray Lopez, Alderman of Chicago's 15th Ward and a candidate for the 4th Congressional District, recently emphasized the importance of supporting local entrepreneurship following the closure of Vesecky’s, a renowned Bohemian bakery. Located at 6634 Cermak Road, Vesecky’s had been serving the community for 118 years before it shut its doors this week.

“Businesses like Vesecky’s, which opened in 1904, are the cornerstones of every community within the 4th District,” Lopez said on Facebook. “I will be a congressman that recognizes that truth & helps pave the way for the next generation of entrepreneurs.”

According to ABC 7, Vesecky’s Bakery has been a cherished establishment in the Chicagoland area for over a century. The news of its closure was announced via a Facebook post that cited retirement as the reason behind this decision. Known for its traditional Czech and European baked goods, the bakery has long been a staple in Chicago. The closure left longtime customers expressing their devastation and praising the authenticity and familial atmosphere created by the bakery’s Czech and Polish recipes.

In October, Lopez announced his candidacy for the March 19 primary against incumbent U.S. Representative Chuy Garcia (D-Ill.), as reported by Block Club Chicago. Lopez has represented Chicago's 15th Ward since 2015. He also briefly ran for Mayor of Chicago earlier this year before withdrawing from the race.

The Census Bureau's map reveals that the 4th Congressional District encompasses various neighborhoods and communities within Cook County and DuPage County including Brighton Park, West Elsdon, South Lawndale; most parts of New City, Pilsen, Chicago Lawn, Clearing, Garfield Ridge and Bridgeport; Burbank, Berwyn, Cicero, Brookfield, LaGrange Park, Northlake, Melrose Park, Berkeley and Franklin Park; and Hinsdale, Elmhurst and Oak Brook.
