Illinois State Rep. Mary Flowers believes medical school students need to learn more about racism against blacks in the profession.
House Bill 4239, filed by Flowers on Jan. 16, would mandate that at medical schools in Illinois, “the minimum required curriculum shall also include a medical humanities course that covers, among other things, the effects of institutional racism on medical education, medical research, and medical care in the United States.”
There are seven medical schools in Illinois- Carle Illinois College of Medicine in Urbana, Rosalind Franklin University Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, University of Chicago School of Medicine, University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, Loyola University Strich Chicago School of Medicine in Mayrood, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Rush Medical College in Chicago and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.
Flowers, 72, who represents Illinois' 31st House District, was first elected to the Illinois State House in 1985. She is serving her 19th term.
The 31st District includes parts of Hickory Hills, Justice, Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge, Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park, Hometown and the Chicago neighborhoods of Parkview, Marycrest, Wrightwood, Beverly View, Auburn Gresham, Auburn Park and Brainerd.
Flowers faces 41 year old teacher Michael Crawford in the March 19, 2024 Democratic primary.
