Dexter Reed, felon killed after he shot at police, received $20,832 PPP loan for his ‘transportation’ business

Dexter Reed, the felon who shot at Chicago police and was killed by return fire, received a $20,832 federal "Paycheck Protection Program" loan in Feb. 2021, according to U.S. Small Business Administration data.

Reed categorized his "business" as "all other support activities for transportation," records show.

Reed's lender was Itria Ventures LLC of New York.

According to Chicago Police records, Reed was arrested on July 13, 2023 at 1806 W. Warren Boulevard, two blocks from the United Center, and charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Reed was also arrested on April 20, 2023 and charged with retail theft from the Zara clothing store.

On March 21, 2024, Reed shot at police after they pulled him over in the 3800 block of West Ferdinand Street, in Humboldt Park.

Reed's shot wounded a Chicago police officer. Four officers returned fire, killing Reed.

Reed, 26 played basketball for Westinghouse H.S. on the city's west side, and later for Morton College in west suburban Cicero.

A Chicago City Wire analysis found that 6,282 West Garfield Park residents received PPP loans totaling $120 million in 2021, averaging $19,119 each.

"Businesses" in Auburn Gresham, on the South Side, received $187.7 million in PPP loans. The neighborhood received 13 times as many loans as it has licensed businesses.
