Chicago Fire FC emerged victorious with a dramatic 4-3 win over Philadelphia Union at Soldier Field on Wednesday night. The team, currently holding a record of 5-10-6 and 21 points, staged a remarkable comeback by scoring three goals late in the second half. This victory marks their fourth win at Soldier Field this season.
Hugo Cuypers and Maren Haile-Selassie continued their impressive scoring streaks, with Gastón Giménez also contributing his first goal of the season. Cuypers netted his first career MLS brace, including the decisive goal in the 90+2nd minute, bringing his season total to nine goals. Haile-Selassie scored in his fourth consecutive match and assisted on Cuypers' game-winner.
The game's opening goal came in the 30th minute when Haile-Selassie capitalized on a defensive error from Philadelphia to score past goalkeeper Oliver Semmle. However, Philadelphia responded with three consecutive goals. Chris Donovan equalized in the 38th minute, followed by Daniel Gazdag's penalty kick just before halftime after a Video Assistant Review (VAR) determined that Chicago's goalkeeper Chris Brady fouled Nathan Harriel. Jack McGlynn added another for Philadelphia early in the second half.
Despite having a goal overturned by VAR in the 54th minute, Chicago persisted. Their comeback began in earnest when Cuypers scored from a header following a short corner in the 82nd minute. Giménez then leveled the score with a powerful volley in the 89th minute after Rafael Czichos headed the ball into his path. In stoppage time, Haile-Selassie set up Cuypers for his second goal of the night, securing all three points for Chicago.
This result places Chicago among only two teams this season to have won multiple matches after trailing by two or more goals. Additionally, they have now accumulated 11 points from trailing positions this year.
Chicago will next face San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, July 7 at PayPal Park.
