Renters in Illinois face significant challenges in finding affordable housing, with nearly half of all renters spending over 30% of their income on housing costs. Additionally, 26% of renters are paying more than half of their income on housing.

A recent poll indicates that 78% of Chicago residents believe the city lacks sufficient affordable housing. The city has identified a gap of approximately 120,000 homes and 240,000 rental units needed to meet demand.

Furthermore, data from 2022 reveals that 97% of the 115,719 Illinoisans who left the state moved to areas with lower taxes, particularly lower property taxes.
