CHICAGO – O’Hare International Airport has been named the most-connected airport in the United States by the Official Aviation Guide’s (OAG) 2024 Megahubs Index, the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) announced today. The annual ranking, which assesses global airports based on the strength of their international and domestic flight connections, places O’Hare at #1 in the U.S. and #9 globally.
This recognition emphasizes O’Hare’s role as a premier gateway for both domestic and international travelers, contributing to Chicago’s status as a global city. Additionally, Midway International Airport was also ranked among the top U.S. airports for connectivity at 22nd, ahead of Dallas Love Field and just behind New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport.
“O’Hare is not just Chicago’s airport; it is the world’s airport,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Together with the high marks for Midway, today’s rankings reaffirm Chicago’s position as a major player on the global stage. Our city remains a hub for travel, commerce, and opportunity. It’s a testament to the dedication of the people who keep our airports running every hour of every day, and who ensure that we remain at the forefront of innovation in the aviation industry.”
With nonstop flights to approximately 260 destinations across the globe, O’Hare continues to lead in air connectivity. The airport’s top U.S. ranking is bolstered by ongoing efforts like the O’Hare 21 capital improvement program designed to expand capacity, enhance efficiency, and improve passenger experience.
“O’Hare’s leadership in connectivity is the result of strategic planning, a commitment to public safety, strong airline partnerships, and a relentless focus on innovation,” said CDA Commissioner Jamie Rhee. “Our ranking as the most-connected airport in the U.S.—and among the top ten globally—reflects our commitment to maintaining Chicago’s position at the forefront of global aviation. As we move forward with major investments like our new satellite concourses and the new O’Hare Global Terminal, we are ensuring that our region’s largest economic engine remains competitive on a global scale.”
O'Hare's ranking in the OAG Megahubs Index is based on potential flight connections available to passengers, making it a critical hub for both domestic and international travelers. The airport's strategic location and robust network continue to attract millions of travelers each year.
O'Hare has consistently ranked #1 on OAG's Top 25 U.S. Domestic Airport Megahubs report since it began publishing in 2017, with exceptions only during 2020 and 2021 when reports were not issued.
