The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) in Chicago, in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is urging residents to participate in National See Something, Say Something Day on Wednesday, September 25. This day falls within Preparedness Month and aims to encourage public vigilance against terrorism-related suspicious activities.

“If You See Something, Say Something®” is a national awareness campaign that highlights the importance of reporting suspicious activities to local authorities. This year’s theme underscores the critical role of public vigilance in national security and counterterrorism efforts throughout the year.

DHS and its partners use this day each year to emphasize the significance of spotting, reporting, and preventing suspicious activities. The key message for this year's campaign is: Spot. Report. Prevent.

OEMC consistently reminds residents to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity they notice, whether at large gatherings, workplaces, places of worship, critical facilities, or online. If you see anything unusual or find suspicious packages, it is advised to call 9-1-1 immediately. For tips on how to report such activities, OEMC's See Something Say Something Toolkit can be accessed online.

In an effort to enhance communication about public safety and emergency management topics, OEMC collaborated with Marvel Comics earlier this year. Chicago native Ironheart from Marvel Superheroes now helps convey preparedness tips and safety information through themed messaging aimed at all age groups. These messages cover various topics including severe weather alerts, excessive heat precautions, water safety measures, and more.

For more detailed information on emergency preparedness tips, residents are encouraged to visit Chicago.gov/OEMC or Ready.gov/September. Updates can also be followed on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter (@ChicagoOEMC), Instagram (chicago_oemc_911) using hashtags #BeReady #NPM2024 #SeeSay #Smart911 #ChicagoOEMC.
