A new garden and public space is being proposed for the Lower West Side. The plan, announced by Mayor Brandon Johnson, involves a $455,000 allocation from the Open Space Impact Fee (OSIF). This proposal was presented to the City Council for consideration.
The site at 947 W. Cullerton St., spanning half an acre, is expected to feature a play area, dog run, landscaping, and public art installations. Previously occupied by Lowenthal Metals, the property underwent environmental remediation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2013 before being acquired by the city. Since 2022, it has been under the ownership of the NeighborSpace land trust.
Funding for this project will be sourced entirely from OSIF. This program utilizes fees collected from residential construction projects to enhance open spaces and mitigate the effects of increased population on community parks and related amenities.
