More than six in ten Chicago Police Department arrests were of black in the third quarter of 2024, according to data published by the City of Chicago Police Department, in its Data Portal.
Hispanics made up 26.1 percent of arrests, according to the data, and whites made up 8.6 percent.
According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Chicago is 32.7 percent white, 28.8 percent black, 29.0 percent Hispanic and seven percent Asian.
The third quarter includes the months of July, August and September.
In total, the city registered 12,418 arrests during the quarter, which represents an increase from the number of arrests during the same quarter of 2023.
Chicago's crime rate has skyrocketed since 2021, according to a Chicago Police Department report. Crime complaints have increased by a staggering 75% in the first three quarters of 2023, compared to the same period in 2021.
The city's police force has also shrunk dramatically since 2019, when previous Mayor Lori Lightfoot took office. The number of police officers decreased by 19%, despite her pledge to increase the police force.
