Chicago's City Civics Day returns with focus on community leadership

On November 9, Chicago will host the second annual City Civics Day, a free event aimed at promoting community engagement and public-private partnerships. The day-long event will take place at Malcolm X College and is co-hosted by the Chicago Departments of Planning & Development (DPD) and Cultural Affairs & Special Events (DCASE).

City Civics Day will feature panel discussions and presentations on various topics such as vacant land use, food security, public transit, arts and culture, and economic development. "City Civics Day is designed to empower Chicagoans that are interested in asserting themselves as community leaders and as engaged participants in neighborhood goals," said DPD Commissioner Ciere Boatright. She emphasized the importance of public engagement for achieving equitable outcomes.

DCASE Commissioner Clinée Hedspeth highlighted the role of art in community building: “This initiative reinforces that art and community are intertwined. Utilizing vacant spaces inspires creativity that supports and enhances our vibrant neighborhoods." She added that collaboration could transform Chicago into a "canvas of collaboration."

The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., featuring more than a dozen presentations, panels, and breakout sessions with experts. Local artists will showcase their work, including performances by Chicago Poet Laureate avery r. young and storytelling group 2nd Story. Movement workshops, arts activities, as well as free breakfast and lunch are also part of the program.
