The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), Greencorps Chicago NFP, and local community gardeners have launched the 811 Chicago Community Garden in Bronzeville. This initiative is aimed at raising awareness about 811 Chicago and the importance of "calling before you dig," while also enhancing public spaces. The launch coincides with National 811 Day on August 11, a day dedicated to reminding communities to safely call 811 before digging to prevent damage to underground utilities.

The garden is located at 433 E. 46th Place in the Bronzeville neighborhood. It will be maintained by the 46th Street and Vincennes Block Club and Community Garden, with financial and technical support from both 811 Chicago and Greencorps Chicago.

Operated by CDOT’s Division of Infrastructure Management, 811 Chicago offers a free, around-the-clock service for homeowners and private contractors in Chicago. This service helps identify underground utilities such as gas, electric, and water lines. Anyone planning excavation work must obtain a "dig ticket" from 811 Chicago at least two days prior to digging to ensure safety near underground infrastructure.

Greencorps Chicago is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide access to sustainable solutions for communities affected by systemic barriers. It manages various programs within the green industry sector, including Greencorps Chicago-Terra Firma—a job training program focused on landscape maintenance, green infrastructure, tree care, and construction projects with community groups across the mid-south region of Chicago.
