The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), in collaboration with 40th Ward Alderperson Andre Vasquez and the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce, has initiated a significant streetscape project on North Lincoln Avenue. The project aims to enhance public space and support economic development by creating a safer, more walkable environment.

Spanning Lincoln Avenue between Western Avenue and Catalpa Avenue, the project includes infrastructure upgrades such as wider sidewalks, protected bike lanes, a public plaza, and new community gathering spaces. Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the project's importance for improving quality-of-life for residents. "I applaud Alderman Vasquez for his leadership in the 40th Ward and the team at CDOT their commitment to investing in our neighborhoods," he stated.

CDOT Acting Commissioner Tom Carney expressed enthusiasm about the project's potential impact. "We are pleased to get started on this streetscape improvement project that will make North Lincoln Avenue a more people-oriented street that will foster community and economic growth," he said.

The $21 million investment builds upon the 2019 Lincoln Square Master Plan and supports plans to establish the Lincoln Avenue North Arts District. Key improvements include roadway geometry adjustments, new pavement markings, ADA ramp upgrades, and additional seating areas.

Alderperson Vasquez highlighted the significance of creating pedestrian-friendly spaces. "It’s more important than ever to have intentional spaces that prioritize pedestrians and allow folks to come together in community," he noted.

Ian Tobin from the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce praised Alderperson Vasquez's leadership in advancing the plan. "Every year, another piece of the 2019 Lincoln Square Master Plan falls into place," Tobin remarked.

Construction is divided into two phases: work will begin on Foster Avenue to Catalpa Avenue first, followed by Western Avenue to Foster Avenue in 2024. Completion is anticipated by late 2024. During construction, access for motorists and pedestrians will be maintained while parking restrictions may apply near active construction zones.
