The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that construction will commence on a Complete Streets improvement project along Milwaukee Avenue between North Avenue and Campbell Avenue on Monday, October 2. The project aims to enhance safety for all road users.
Key improvements include the installation of concrete protected bike lanes, which will separate cyclists from motorists to increase street safety. CTA bus stops will be improved to enhance operations and provide more space for transit users. Additionally, crossing distances will be reduced, and visibility for pedestrians crossing Milwaukee Avenue will be increased with features such as a pedestrian refuge island and upgraded curb bumpouts. Connections to the Bloomingdale Trail for walkers and cyclists will also be improved.
Construction is expected to continue throughout the season. During this period, the bike lane between North and Campbell will remain closed. Flaggers and signage will manage bicycle traffic, with alternative routes available via bike lanes on Damen Avenue and Armitage Avenue.
Drivers are advised to pay attention to flaggers and construction signs when navigating work zones. They should adhere to posted speed limits and remain vigilant for workers, equipment, pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.
