The Chicago Hounds have announced the signing of American loosehead prop Faka’Osi Pifeleti. The California native, standing at 6 feet and weighing 265 pounds, is set to begin his eighth season in Major League Rugby (MLR), bringing with him a record of 72 caps.
Pifeleti's journey began in California before moving to the United Kingdom, where he attended Oaklands College Hertfordshire and developed through the Saracens' academy alongside his brother Kapeli. His MLR career started with the San Diego Legion during the league's inaugural season in 2018. After four seasons there, he joined the Austin Gilgronis in 2022 but returned to San Diego for two more seasons.
Despite battling injuries throughout the 2024 season, limiting him to five appearances and three starts, Pifeleti had an impressive year in 2023. He was recognized with an All-Pro honorable mention after starting 13 of his 15 appearances and contributing significantly to San Diego's Western Conference title with a record of 15-1.
Throughout his MLR career, Pifeleti has accumulated notable statistics: eight tries scored, including a seven-pointer; carrying the ball 265 times for a total gain of 1,113 meters; and completing 419 out of 503 tackle attempts on defense. He also holds the distinction of being the 17th player in MLR history to reach 50 caps.
Pifeleti also brings international experience to the Hounds' forward pack. He made his debut for the US Eagles against New Zealand's All Blacks in October 2021. His family has a strong rugby background; his father played for Tonga's national team while his brother is part of Saracens and a regular in the Eagles' player pool.
This signing adds domestic talent to the Hounds’ loosehead prop group, where Pifeleti will compete with veteran Zurab Zhavania for first-string positions as training camp approaches next year.
Season ticket packages for the upcoming Major League Rugby season are now available as fans prepare for what is being dubbed "the Year of the Dawg."
