UI Health has been honored with the Partner for Change award by Practice Greenhealth, a prominent organization focused on promoting environmental sustainability within the healthcare sector. This accolade is awarded to healthcare facilities that show continuous improvement and expansion in their efforts to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably, among other initiatives.

To qualify for this recognition, facilities must demonstrate a recycling rate of at least 15 percent of their total waste, reduction in regulated medical waste, progress towards eliminating mercury, and successful implementation of sustainability programs across various areas.

"In healthcare, sustainability means looking at how our operations affect the health and safety of our environment," UI Health stated. "It is at the heart of UI Health’s healing mission, and we are proud to share that our sustainability strategies have supported a healthier environment for our patients, staff, and communities."

The strategies employed by UI Health to enhance sustainability include minimizing and recycling waste, addressing chemicals of concern, reducing energy and water consumption, as well as establishing environmentally preferable purchasing criteria.
