The Art Institute of Chicago has announced Eric Lefkofsky as the new chair of its Board of Trustees. He will replace Denise Gardner, who has led the board for the past three years, overseeing both the museum and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).

During Gardner's tenure, significant strides were made in securing the institution's financial stability. The museum raised $200 million to support its endowment and received a $75 million gift for campus expansion. Her leadership also guided the museum through and beyond the pandemic, resulting in increased attendance and student enrollment.

"I am incredibly proud of the work we have done over the past three years to position the Art Institute for sustained success," Gardner stated. She plans to continue serving on the board and supporting Lefkofsky.

Eric Lefkofsky, founder and CEO of Tempus, brings extensive business and civic experience to his new role. Having served on the board for 15 years and as vice chair since 2023, he is well-prepared to lead. "I am very grateful for Denise and the work she has done to lead the Art Institute during a time of enormous change," Lefkofsky said.

James Rondeau, President and Eloise W. Martin Director at the museum, expressed confidence in Lefkofsky’s appointment: “Eric has been a steadfast collaborator... His leadership will be essential as we plan for the future.”

Jiseon Lee Isbara, SAIC President, added: “He will be a terrific partner in helping SAIC continue its more than 150-year tradition.”

Lefkofsky's commitment to contemporary art collection aligns with his role at one of Chicago’s premier cultural institutions. His civic engagement provides him with valuable insight into leading this next phase at the Art Institute.
