Jan Schakowsky, a long-serving member of the U.S. Congress representing Illinois' 9th district, recently shared her views on several issues through a series of tweets. Schakowsky, who has been in office since 1999, addressed topics ranging from franchisee empowerment to AI regulation and consumer protection.
On December 5, 2024, Schakowsky highlighted the challenges faced by franchisees. She stated that while franchising can be "a lifeline for those looking to create their own American dream," it can also become "a nightmare" when franchisees are controlled by predatory corporations. In response to this issue, she announced the introduction of a bill aimed at empowering franchisees. "Franchising can be a lifeline for those looking to create their own American dream."
Later that day, Schakowsky turned her attention to artificial intelligence (AI). She emphasized the importance of accurate representation by AI developers regarding their technology's capabilities. She warned that improperly designed AI algorithms could exacerbate existing inequalities and harm consumers. Schakowsky called for action to implement "common sense guardrails" on the industry. "AI developers should not misrepresent what their tech can do."
On December 6, 2024, Schakowsky commended the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for its efforts in returning nearly $2 billion in illegal junk fees to Americans. She expressed support for the CFPB's actions against unfair financial practices affecting consumers. "The @CFPB is returning almost $2 BILLION in illegal junk fees to Americans' wallets."
