The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Tom Carney and 10th Ward Alderman Peter Chico, alongside South Chicago community leaders, have marked the completion of a significant streetscape improvement project on Commercial Avenue. The development stretches from South Chicago Avenue to 90th Street and aims to enhance traffic safety, upgrade infrastructure, and invigorate the area for local businesses.

"Upgrading streetscapes like Commercial Avenue is key to reactivating neighborhood corridors across Chicago," said CDOT Commissioner Tom Carney. "This project delivers critical infrastructure improvements while reflecting the rich history and culture of South Chicago, creating a vibrant, livable corridor that benefits residents, businesses, and visitors alike."

Alderman Peter Chico emphasized the importance of these developments: “Commercial Avenue has always been a cornerstone of South Chicago. These improvements not only address critical infrastructure needs but also reflect the pride and resilience of our community.”

The upgrades include new sidewalks, parkway pavers, lighting, street trees, improved roadway geometry for pedestrian safety, full-width resurfacing with drainage enhancements, bus bulbs for efficient transit stops, raised bike lanes for cyclists' safety, and upgraded traffic signals with Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS). Additionally, light pole identifiers and sidewalk plaques celebrate South Chicago's historical significance.

These changes are guided by South Chicago’s 2016 Commercial Avenue Revitalization Plan and involved extensive community engagement to ensure they meet both transportation needs and design aspirations reflective of local identity. Construction on Section 2 between 90th and 87th Street is set to commence in 2025.
