The Art Institute of Chicago has announced a notable expansion of its permanent collection in 2024. This year, the museum incorporated over 1,000 new works across various departments. These acquisitions include southern African beadwork and rarely-viewed surrealist paintings.

The museum's efforts aim to diversify its collection by including pieces from different times, geographies, artistic movements, and mediums. The newly acquired works span multiple categories such as Architecture and Design, Arts of Africa, Arts of Asia, Arts of the Americas, Modern and Contemporary Art, Prints and Drawings, and Textiles.

"These impressive additions further the museum’s commitment to diversifying its iconic collection across time, geographies, artistic movements, and mediums," stated the Art Institute of Chicago. The selection features both familiar artists and new voices contributing to the art world.
