Mayor Brandon Johnson, in collaboration with the City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), has announced the return of the New Year’s Eve fireworks on the Chicago River. This event will feature a custom projection by ART on THE MART, starting at 10 p.m. on December 31, leading up to a countdown projected onto THE MART’s façade.
At 11:55 p.m., a clock will begin the countdown to midnight, followed by a fireworks display launched from several bridges along the river. "New Year’s is a time when we gather with friends and family to reflect on what’s been and what’s yet to come," said Mayor Johnson. He invites residents and visitors to join the celebration along the Riverwalk.
The best viewing spots for the fireworks are along Upper Wacker Drive from McClurg Court to Franklin Street. The display will be launched from various bridges including Orleans Street, La Salle Drive, Clark Street, Dearborn Street, State Street, and Columbus Drive.
DCASE Commissioner Clinée Hedspeth expressed excitement about bringing back this tradition: “It’s a fantastic spectacle worthy of our great city.” She added that it offers an opportunity to look forward to what 2025 will bring.
ART on THE MART will showcase past projections starting at 10 p.m., culminating in an official countdown clock projection at 11:55 p.m. The Riverwalk will close at 11 p.m., with limited access until 12:15 a.m. for spectators.
In addition to this event, Navy Pier will host its own award-winning fireworks show starting with a countdown to midnight. For more details on these events, visit respective websites such as Chicago.gov/NYE and NavyPier.org.
The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) advises attendees to remain vigilant in crowds and report any suspicious activity. OEMC will oversee citywide activities in coordination with local safety departments.
