A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Cook County Sheriff's Police on January 7, 2025. The request was made by us at Chicago City Wire, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The FOIA request specifically sought access to all arrest records from the year 2024. The details requested for each arrest record included the arrestee's name, date of arrest, gender, race, date of birth, and the crime committed.
As journalists at Chicago City Wire, we believe in holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Access to these public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We also believe that as media professionals engaged in disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.
We await a response from the Cook County Sheriff's Police regarding this FOIA request.
