Mike Quigley, a U.S. Congressman representing Illinois' 5th district, recently took to social media to express his concerns over federal funding freezes implemented by former President Donald Trump. Quigley has been vocal about the implications of these budgetary decisions on vulnerable populations.

On January 28, 2025, Quigley discussed his conversation with Jim Acosta regarding what he termed as "Donald Trump's unconstitutional freeze of federal funding." He emphasized that the freeze includes cutting off funds to programs aimed at feeding hungry children, asserting that "Donald Trump is penalizing children to make a political point." "This morning, I talked with Jim Acosta about Donald Trump's unconstitutional freeze of federal funding, including cutting off funding to programs that feed hungry children. Donald Trump is penalizing children to make a political point."

In another statement made on January 29, 2025, Quigley criticized the Trump administration's understanding of its own spending cuts. He pointed out an instance where the White House press secretary was unable to confirm whether Medicaid would be affected by these cuts while states were reportedly locked out of the system. "Not even the Trump administration itself seems to understand how disastrous their spending cuts are. The White House press secretary said she would need to “check back” on whether Medicaid is impacted while states are actively locked out of the system."

Later that day, Quigley's office received communication from a domestic violence organization serving over 2,000 survivors annually. The organization expressed concern that continued financial cutbacks might force them to terminate staff and close legal services essential for aiding vulnerable individuals. "My office was contacted by a domestic violence organization that serves over 2,000 domestic violence survivors every year. If Trump's cuts continue, they may have to fire staff and close their legal services. Trump's actions are leaving vulnerable people without resources."
