Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) have announced the 50 finalists for Chicago's third annual 'You Name A Snowplow' contest. Residents can now view these names and vote for up to six favorites at shovel.chicago.gov until January 21, 2024. The top six selected names will be assigned to snowplows in each of the city's six snow districts.
"Each year, city staff looks forward to reviewing all the fun and imaginative names submitted by Chicago residents for this contest," said DSS Commissioner Cole Stallard. "It’s wonderful to see the creativity and engagement across the City, and we encourage all Chicagoans to take the time to check out the finalists and vote for their favorite snowplow names."
Once chosen, signs with the winning names will be placed on the respective snowplows. Residents who proposed these names first will have a chance for a photo opportunity with their named plow and receive city merchandise.
The DSS oversees more than 9,400 lane miles of roadways using over 300 salt spreaders ready for deployment as needed. Additionally, more than 400,000 tons of salt are available at various locations throughout Chicago. The public can track the city's full snow fleet in real-time during winter storms through the city's plow tracker.
