FOIA Request to Cook County Sheriff’s Office Regarding Immigration Detainer Records on January 29, 2025.
In a bid to uphold transparency and hold public institutions accountable, we at Chicago City Wire have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The request, dated January 29, 2025, seeks documents and records showing persons committed to county jails who have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities.
The request was made under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140, with a preference for electronic format delivery. In line with our role in gathering and reporting news to the public, we also requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
We will continue our efforts in providing transparency to the public and holding public institutions accountable through comprehensive news coverage.
