The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) has introduced an innovative clinical model aimed at enhancing postpartum care for new mothers. The study conducted by UIC researchers reveals that mothers attending the UI Health Two-Generation Clinic were significantly more likely to receive primary care in the year following delivery compared to those receiving standard postpartum care.

The research highlights that mothers treated at this clinic were over five times as likely to see a primary care doctor within a year after giving birth. Additionally, these mothers had greater access to lactation support and psychiatric services addressing behavioral health concerns.

Dr. Rachel Caskey, head of the Department of Medicine at UI Health, stated, "The study shows that the two-generation model of care leads to more timely and more frequent health care for moms during the postpartum period." She emphasized its importance for mothers at risk of adverse pregnancy-related outcomes.

Established in 2020 by a multidisciplinary team, the Two-Generation Clinic integrates adult medicine and pediatrics, allowing both new babies and their mothers to be treated during the same visit. This approach enables physicians to evaluate common postpartum conditions such as cardiovascular issues or chronic medical concerns like obesity or diabetes.

"Many of the challenges facing new moms are primary care issues; they aren’t gynecological issues," explained Dr. Sam Wainwright from UI Health. He added that most young women do not continue seeing primary care providers post-obstetrical care, prompting the clinic's inception to meet maternal needs effectively.

The Journal of General Internal Medicine published findings showing significant differences between 98 mothers attending the clinic and 149 receiving standard postpartum care. While obstetrics/gynecology visits were similar across groups, 97% of clinic attendees received primary care versus just 19% in traditional settings. Furthermore, patients visiting the Two-Generation Clinic averaged nearly six visits compared with less than one for those under standard care.

Dr. Erin Hickey collaborates with Dr. Wainwright in providing comprehensive mother-child healthcare services at this facility.

"We’re not replacing obstetrics," said Wainwright, highlighting that primary care offers better long-term management for chronic conditions post-pregnancy.

Patients at the Two-Generation Clinic also benefitted from increased specialty consultations: two-thirds received breastfeeding support versus 15% under conventional treatment methods; half attended therapy sessions compared with only 6% elsewhere despite equal depression screening rates across clinics.
