Chicago Contrarian, an account on the social media platform X that offers commentary on Chicago affairs, recently described an attack on police officers by the Latin Kings gang as an "ambush." The account questioned whether Mayor Brandon Johnson would take action to protect law enforcement. This inquiry was made in a post dated April 8.
"The Latin Kings, reportedly declared a "war" on law enforcement, stating that they would target officers due to the increased pressure from police crackdowns in Little Village," said Contrarian, Blogger. "It was an ambush. Will @ChicagosMayor do something to protect our police?"
According to WGN, Chicago police officers were reportedly targeted in an ambush-style shooting on the night of April 4, 2025. The incident occurred while they were responding to a call in the Little Village neighborhood. Officers were investigating a report of four males stopping vehicles and brandishing guns near West 24th Street and South Sacramento Avenue when they came under fire. Surveillance footage reportedly shows two suspects waiting for the officers to pass before opening fire on their squad car. A bullet struck the rear of the patrol vehicle; however, no officers sustained injuries. Police later recovered a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine from a nearby yard and arrested four individuals attempting to flee.

In response to the incident, Mayor Johnson's office released a statement through WGN: "This brazen act of violence has no place in our communities. These individuals put our police officers and the entire neighborhood in danger by recklessly firing down a residential street. While we are relieved that no officers or residents were injured in this incident, this could have easily become a tragedy. Chicago Police Department is investigating this incident and we will provide updates as they become available. We must continue to double down on our efforts to get illegal guns off of our streets and to stem the flow of guns into our city."
According to Chicago City Wire, this ambush follows a warning from the Latin Kings, who declared a "war" on law enforcement due to increased police crackdowns in Little Village—a neighborhood known for significant gang activity and drug dealing.
