The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is set to commence emergency repair work on the State Street Bascule Bridge over the main branch of the Chicago River on Monday, April 28, 2025. This maintenance will necessitate a complete closure of the bridge to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic until mid-November 2025.
"Detour information" is provided for the duration of the closure. Northbound traffic from State Street is advised to take a detour to westbound Wacker Drive, then proceed to northbound Dearborn Street, continue to eastbound Kinzie Street, and return to northbound State Street. Southbound traffic will be rerouted from State Street to westbound Kinzie Street, then to southbound Clark Street, proceed to eastbound Wacker Drive, and back to southbound State Street. Pedestrians can use Dearborn Street or Wabash Avenue as alternate routes, while bicyclists may use the existing protected bike lane along Dearborn Street. "CTA reroutes are currently being finalized."
The project involves significant work, including removing and replacing floor beams and repairing multiple center lock parts. There will also be additional repairs to the viaduct north of the bridge.
Details about the project are available in an informational flyer titled "State St Bascule Bridge and Viaduct Repair."
