The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) along with Airports Council International (ACI) World have announced that O’Hare International Airport is ranked as the second-busiest airport globally for aircraft movements in 2024, and the eighth busiest for passenger traffic.
"Chicago has long stood at the crossroads of global travel and commerce, and O’Hare’s ranking as the world’s second-busiest airport for aircraft movements is a powerful reflection of that legacy," stated Mayor Brandon Johnson. He attributed this achievement to the strength of Chicago's workforce and the efforts of the leadership at the Chicago Department of Aviation.
CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee expressed gratitude to the frontline staff: "I’m incredibly grateful to our frontline CDA staff for their tireless dedication to ensuring Chicago’s airports operate safely, efficiently, and reliably — even amid growing demand.” Rhee highlighted efforts under the O’Hare 21 capital program to modernize the airport into a leading international hub.
In 2024, O’Hare managed 776,036 aircraft movements, ranking second after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. This reflects a 7.7% increase compared to 2023. Passenger traffic exceeded 80 million, growing by 8.3% from the previous year. This was the largest year-over-year gain among American airports, moving O’Hare up to eighth place from ninth in 2023.
"Amid global challenges, the resilience of the world’s busiest airports shines," said ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci. He emphasized the critical role of these hubs in global trade and connectivity, reaffirming ACI World’s support for its members.
Looking ahead to 2025, Chicago’s airports are set for continued growth, with nearly 17.8 million departing seats anticipated this summer at both O’Hare and Midway, suggesting it could be the busiest season yet.
