Sunshine Gospel Ministries is set to replace 4.1 acres of City land with a new community center in Washington Park. The land was officially approved for sale and redevelopment by the City Council today. The center will be located at 6016 S. King Drive, spanning 77,050 square feet with a budget of $36.9 million. Facilities will include a gymnasium, cafe, youth programming areas, offices, and outdoor athletic amenities.
This project will involve the transformation of 16 City lots, specifically located at 345-79 E. 60th St., 6000-50 S. King Drive, and 6001-49 S. Calumet Ave. These lots are to be sold to the non-profit organization, which has been active for 119 years, at a nominal rate of $1 each.
Mayor Johnson confirmed earlier in January that the city would back the project with a $5 million Community Development Grant.
