The former WAX TRAX! Records building in Lincoln Park is on the path to becoming an official Chicago landmark. Mayor Brandon Johnson presented a proposal to the City Council that, if approved, would grant the building landmark status.

Situated at 2449 N. Lincoln Ave., this two-story, Renaissance Revival-style building has historical significance dating back to its construction in the 1880s. It gained prominence in 1978 when WAX TRAX! Records opened its doors, attracting visitors worldwide for its diverse music genres such as punk, new wave, rockabilly, and dance.

The record shop also launched its own label, contributing to Chicago's reputation as the home of industrial music. Closing in 1993, WAX TRAX! was more than just a music store; it was a hub for clothing, fanzines, and concert tickets, drawing musicians and enthusiasts alike.

If designated as a landmark, the status would ensure the protection of all the building's exterior elevations.
