Brian Kasal, president of Northside Republicans, said that President Trump's new trade agreement with China signals an end to what he described as the exploitation of the United States. He made his statement to Chicago City Wire.

"President Trump is boldly standing up for American workers and proving once again that he puts our country first on the world stage," said Kasal. "With his new trade agreement with China, he's not just lowering tariffs—he's leveling the playing field and opening critical markets for U.S. businesses. This is a powerful move to bring jobs back home, strengthen our economy, and end decades of unfair trade practices. Trump's fearless leadership is sending a clear message: America will no longer be taken advantage of."

According to Fox News, following trade talks in Geneva, China agreed to open its markets to American businesses. Although some details are not yet finalized, President Trump has noted that China's new commitment marks a shift from past imbalances. Trump called the move "the most important thing to happen," highlighting the opportunity for U.S. companies to now fairly compete in China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led negotiations that resulted in temporary tariff reductions, though some tariffs on cars, steel, and aluminum will remain.

In a May 12 Fact Sheet published on its website, the White House reported on the new trade agreement with China secured by President Trump. The deal reduces tariffs by 115% on both sides while retaining a 10% baseline tariff and suspends recent retaliatory measures. China will pause its 34% tariff for 90 days and remove non-tariff countermeasures. The U.S. will suspend its reciprocal 34% tariff but keep key existing tariffs, including those tied to fentanyl and national security. Both nations pledged ongoing talks addressing the $295.4 billion U.S. trade deficit with China.

Kasal, a resident of Chicago's 43rd Ward, was first appointed to the role of President of Chicago's Northside Republican Club in 2021. According to the organization’s website, he is "focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Chicago Northside voters."
