June marks Men’s Health Month, an initiative focused on raising awareness about health issues affecting men and encouraging proactive health measures. Statistics indicate that men are less likely than women to regularly visit a doctor. This month aims to change that trend, emphasizing the importance of regular check-ups.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that men have a higher tendency than women to smoke, drink excessively, and delay medical care. These behaviors increase the risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Regular screenings and check-ups are crucial in detecting these issues early when they are most treatable. Preventive care can significantly reduce the risk of complications and improve long-term health outcomes.

Key health checks for men include monitoring blood pressure to prevent heart attacks and strokes, checking cholesterol levels to avoid heart issues, diabetes screening particularly for those over 45 or with risk factors like obesity or family history, prostate health discussions especially for those with a family history, colorectal cancer screening starting at age 45, and mental health evaluations to address depression, stress, and anxiety.

Preventive care is not solely about avoiding illness but also about leading a longer, healthier life. During this Men’s Health Month, individuals are encouraged to prioritize their health by scheduling a check-up.
