The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced the activation of new automated speed enforcement cameras in various locations near parks and schools across the city. Each camera will initially operate under a 30-day warning period during which no fines will be issued. After this period, citations will be sent to registered vehicle owners who exceed the speed limit by six miles per hour or more. Fines are set at $35 for vehicles traveling 6–10 mph over the limit and $100 for those exceeding it by 11 mph or more.
Chicago's speed camera program is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing traffic safety, promoting safer driving habits, and reducing accidents through improved street design, traffic calming measures, and pedestrian infrastructure.
Starting June 1, warnings have been issued at these locations:
- 1477 W. Cermak Rd – Benito Juarez High School
- 147 S. Desplaines St – Francis Xavier Warde School
From June 15, warnings will begin at:
- 4021 W. Belmont Ave – Aspira School
- 631 S. Racine Ave – Arrigo Park
- 216 S. Jefferson St – Heritage Green Park
- 8550 S. Lafayette Ave – Perspectives High School
- 2948 W. 47th St – Mansueto High School
Additional sites are expected to join the network throughout the year.
For school zones, automated enforcement operates from Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with a reduced speed limit of 20 mph when children are present until 4 p.m., after which regular limits apply until closing time at parks typically from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.
All systems include signs and pavement markings alerting drivers as they enter an automated speed enforcement Safety Zone.
Active camera locations can be found on the City Data Portal and ChicagoTrafficTracker.com, with further information available in the Automated Speed Enforcement Frequently Asked Questions section online.
