Volunteer Services at UI Health has surpassed 1,000 active volunteers, establishing its program as the largest hospital volunteer initiative in Illinois and the fourth-largest nationwide. Nearly 1,100 students and community members contribute at least eight hours monthly in various roles such as greeters and patient companions.

"Our team is incredibly proud of this milestone," said Kinga Keilman, senior director of Volunteer Services at UI Health. "Continuing to grow our program has given our volunteers more opportunities to connect with patients, give back to their communities, and, in many cases, begin careers in healthcare."

UI Health Volunteers play essential roles across the hospital. In the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), volunteers participate in the NICU Baby Cuddler program, providing comfort to newborns when families are absent. Emergency Room volunteers assist patients and families in navigating the fast-paced environment. Inpatient Pediatrics volunteers engage hospitalized children through activities like reading and playing games. Surgical Services volunteers support nurses by preparing educational materials for patients.

The Volunteer-to-Employee Pathway helps volunteers transition into permanent healthcare roles by offering free training for positions such as CNA, medical assistant, and phlebotomist. Participants receive application assistance and connections to hiring managers at UI Health.

Volunteer Services also manages clinical rotations and shadowing experiences for students pursuing healthcare careers. These programs are typically arranged with UIC’s seven health sciences colleges to support student growth.

"As Chicago’s only public academic medical center, training the next generation of healthcare professionals is critical to our hospital’s mission," Kinga stated. "Our volunteer program has become an incredible resource for students and young people looking to get hands-on experience in a healthcare setting."
