Universal Destinations & Experiences, a division of Comcast NBCUniversal, has announced plans to open its second Universal Horror Unleashed location in Chicago. This marks the company's first branded experience in the Midwest and is part of an initiative to expand its brand into new markets with innovative concepts. The new attraction will be located at 700 W. Chicago Avenue, across from Bally’s Casino, transforming a 114,000-square-foot commercial building into a permanent horror-themed entertainment venue.
The project is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the city, with World Business Chicago estimating an impact of over $1 billion. The venue will feature mazes, themed bars, food and beverage options, and retail space offering exclusive merchandise. Scheduled to open in 2027, it aims to create more than 400 permanent jobs in various roles.
Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed enthusiasm for the development: “We’re thrilled to welcome Universal Horror Unleashed to the City of Chicago,” he said. Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the strategic importance of this investment: “Universal’s decision to make such a significant investment in Illinois is a testament to the state’s unmatched entertainment sector.”
The company will benefit from State incentives through Illinois’ Economic Development for a Growing Economy (EDGE) program. This initiative aligns with Universal's broader strategy of expanding its presence globally. Recent developments include Universal Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort and upcoming projects like Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas.
Page Thompson, President of New Ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences stated: “Universal Horror Unleashed delivers on our promise to create highly immersive and terrifying horror experiences that connect with fans year-round.” Phil Clement from World Business Chicago added: “Universal’s decision to build in Chicago reflects what more and more companies are recognizing: this is the best big city in the U.S.”
Construction for the new attraction is slated to begin in early 2026 after design finalization and permitting processes are completed.
