As the United States gears up for its 249th Independence Day, Chicago's O'Hare and Midway International Airports are preparing to accommodate an influx of travelers. Between July 2 and July 7, approximately 1.86 million passengers are expected to pass through these airports, according to airline projections.

Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted Chicago's attractions during the summer season: "Whether it is our world-renowned festivals, our beautiful parks and beaches, or the many cultural and sporting events taking place, no city compares to what Chicago has to offer in the summertime." He added that the city is ready to welcome visitors warmly.

O'Hare Airport anticipates around 1.54 million passengers over this period, marking an 11% increase from last year's Fourth of July weekend and a 9.2% rise compared to 2019. The airport expects its busiest day on Sunday, July 6, with more than 300,000 travelers projected. Midway Airport also anticipates a busy period with approximately 320,000 passengers expected.

Michael McMurray, Commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), emphasized the quality of service at the airports: "When folks come to Chicago during the busy summer season, the hard-working employees at our airports are always ready to provide first-class service."

Travelers using Chicago's airports are advised on various measures to ensure smooth travel experiences. Options like cell phone lots and public transit alternatives such as CTA Blue Line and Metra can help prevent congestion.

The Kennedy Expressway reconstruction project continues through late 2025. Drivers should expect delays but can use outbound express lanes for quicker access to O'Hare.

Passengers are encouraged to check parking availability at FlyChicago.com due to high demand during holiday periods. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) advises arriving early as wait times may be longer than usual.

For international travelers returning through O'Hare, Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) has been introduced by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This biometric screening process aims to expedite processing times significantly.

Domestic travelers aged 18 or older must present a Real ID or alternative identification forms as required by TSA regulations.

Rideshare pickups at O'Hare have designated zones for easy access while taxis and limousines remain available for citywide transportation needs.

Additionally, new dining options have been introduced at O'Hare's Terminal 1 along with live entertainment scheduled throughout both airports during the holiday weekend.

FlyChicago.com provides real-time updates on flights and other airport services for those traveling through Chicago's airports this Fourth of July weekend.
