Scalp psoriasis is a chronic skin condition marked by the rapid replication of skin cells on the scalp, leading to red, scaly patches. While it can appear at any age, adults are most commonly affected. The condition often requires ongoing management as flare-ups may come and go but typically persist over time.
Experts believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers contribute to the development of psoriasis. Genetics play a significant role in making individuals more susceptible, while factors such as stress, skin injuries, infections, or certain medications can trigger episodes.
“Don’t feel like you need to drive yourself crazy searching for the cause of your scalp psoriasis,” said Dr. Sheryl Hoyer, dermatologist at UI Health. “Although stress can trigger flare ups, and smoking and alcohol use can worse them, the main cause of psoriasis is in our genes, which unfortunately, is not in our control.”
Treatment options for scalp psoriasis include medicated shampoos or steroid creams applied topically, oral medications, biologic therapies, and light therapy. Dermatologists work with patients to create personalized treatment plans based on individual needs.
“We know scalp psoriasis is trickier than meets the eye. For example, applying a topical treatment to a hair-bearing area can be difficult,” Dr. Hoyer explained. “These are the kind of factors we consider when prescribing a treatment, and there are many times that we decide to go in a different treatment direction as a result. We work with our patients to make the decision that will be best for them and their lives.”
Managing scalp psoriasis also involves self-care practices beyond medication. Maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity, meditation techniques for stress reduction, soothing baths, consistent moisturizing routines, and having social support can help improve symptoms and overall well-being.
Psoriasis does not have to define those who live with it. With appropriate medical care and support from specialists at UI Health’s dermatology program (https://derm.uihealth.care/), patients can manage their symptoms effectively.
“Psoriasis may be a part of your story, but it doesn’t have to define you. With an expert care team and the right treatment plan, UI Health can get you back to feeling great in your own skin — literally and figuratively!”
