September marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing knowledge about prostate cancer and the importance of early detection. Prostate cancer forms in the prostate gland, which produces seminal fluid. While it often grows slowly, identifying the disease early can improve treatment outcomes.
Thorek Memorial Hospital is focusing on raising awareness and encouraging preventive care among men in the community. According to the hospital, prostate cancer may not show symptoms in its early stages, making screening essential. As the disease advances, individuals might experience frequent urination at night, difficulty starting or stopping urination, weak or interrupted urine flow, blood in urine or semen, erectile dysfunction, or pain in the pelvic area. These symptoms could also be related to non-cancerous conditions but should still be checked by a healthcare provider.
Several risk factors increase the likelihood of developing prostate cancer. The disease is most common in men over 50 years old. A family history—such as having a father or brother with prostate cancer—doubles one’s risk. African American men are more likely to develop aggressive forms of the disease. Lifestyle choices such as poor diet, obesity, and smoking may also contribute to higher risk.
Screening methods for prostate cancer include the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and Digital Rectal Exam (DRE). The American Cancer Society recommends that men discuss screening with their doctors beginning at age 50 for those at average risk; age 45 for high-risk individuals (including African American men and those with close family history); and age 40 for men with multiple relatives diagnosed at an early age.
"At Thorek Memorial Hospital, our dedicated team provides comprehensive Urology Services, including prostate cancer screenings and treatment options. We are here to support you every step of the way with compassionate, expert care."
Men are encouraged to speak with their doctors about individual risk factors and whether screening is appropriate for them during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
