Chicago Fire FC II goalkeeper David Molenda has been named MLS NEXT Rising Star of Matchweek 23, following his performance in a 2-0 win over Philadelphia Union II on July 15. The announcement was made by Chicago Fire FC II and MLS NEXT Pro.
Molenda, who is 17 years old, earned his first league honor of the year after securing the first shutout of his MLS NEXT Pro career. He made seven saves during the match at SeatGeek Stadium, with five coming in the first half and two late in the second half. This result marked Chicago's fourth clean sheet and their seventh home win of the season, which leads the league.
This recognition is Molenda's first personal award since joining MLS NEXT Pro. It came after only his second start for Chicago Fire II. In his debut on July 20, he recorded 13 saves in a 3-2 victory against Toronto FC II. Earlier this season, another Academy goalkeeper from Chicago, Patrick Los, received the same award after earning his third shutout in a 1-0 win over Chattanooga FC on July 5.
Chicago Fire FC II will next travel to New Jersey for an Eastern Conference game against New York Red Bulls II. The match is scheduled for Sunday, August 24 at 6:00 p.m. CT and will be available to stream for free on MLSNEXTPro.com.
