Patients, families, and staff from Shriners Children’s gathered in Hurst, Texas for Higgy Con, which is recognized as the world’s largest meeting of scoliosis patients. For the third year in a row, Shriners Children’s sponsored this annual event to provide support, education, and connection for young people living with scoliosis.

The conference offered children and teens a space to meet others facing similar physical and emotional challenges due to scoliosis. Over three days, attendees participated in activities such as a fashion show, crafts, and a dance party. Families also had opportunities to interact with staff from Shriners Children’s Chicago and Shriners Children’s Philadelphia to learn about specialized spine care available globally.

Parents attended educational talks and panel discussions during the event. Amer F. Samdani, M.D., chief of staff at Shriners Children's Philadelphia and pediatric orthopedic spine surgeon, was among the speakers. Dr. Samdani discussed vertebral body tethering as well as fusion surgical options for treating scoliosis. Spine nurse Linda Cree, RN led support group sessions throughout the weekend and provided information along with encouragement to families.

Many participants left Higgy Con having gained new knowledge and connections within the community.
