UI Health is offering expanded lactation support services to families at various stages of their breastfeeding journey. The services include consultations with International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants, educational classes, and guidance for new parents.

Angela Martinez, APRN-CNP, a lactation counselor at UI Health, described the health advantages associated with breastfeeding. She stated, “Breast milk supports healthy growth, development, and weight gain in those important early months. It can reduce the risk of developing asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, and even childhood leukemia.”

Martinez also noted that breastfeeding benefits mothers as well as babies. “Mothers who breastfeed often have faster postpartum recoveries,” she said. “Breastfeeding can also lower the risk for many long-term diseases, including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even breast and ovarian cancer.”

She added that breastfeeding encourages bonding through oxytocin release after childbirth and may lower the risk of postpartum depression.

UI Health provides a virtual prenatal series with a dedicated breastfeeding class to help parents prepare before delivery. After birth, families have access to individual lactation consultations addressing issues such as feeding technique and pumping.

The hospital has several private pumping rooms available on campus. Staff can also assist patients in navigating insurance options for acquiring a breast pump.

Appointments with lactation consultants at UI Health are available by phone or email for those seeking further information or assistance.
