Chicago Fire FC defender Leonardo Barroso has been selected for the Portugal U-21 National Team as they begin their campaign in the 2027 Under-21 EURO qualifying tournament.

Barroso and his teammates will compete in Group B, which includes Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Czechia, Gibraltar, and Scotland. Portugal is scheduled to play Azerbaijan at Estádio Cidade de Barcelos on September 5. The team will then travel to Motherwell, Scotland to face the Scottish U-21 side at Fir Park Stadium on September 9.

Barroso joined Chicago Fire FC after two seasons with Sporting CP B of Sporting Lisbon. This season, he has appeared in 17 matches for Chicago Fire FC, starting ten times and recording one assist.

The defender has previously represented Portugal at various youth levels from U-15 through U-20. At the 2022 UEFA Under-17 European Championship, Barroso played every minute as Portugal reached the semifinals before losing to France in a penalty shootout. He also featured for the Portugal U-20 squad in five matches during the European Elite League and scored once as a right back in a win over Poland.
