Communities nationwide are observing Suicide Prevention Awareness Month this September, focusing on efforts to reduce stigma and promote mental health support. Thomas H Boyd Memorial Hospital has joined in the campaign, emphasizing the importance of awareness and sharing resources with the local community.
The hospital is promoting BeThe1To, a national initiative that outlines practical steps individuals can take to help those who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. The steps include asking directly about suicide, being present for someone in need, helping keep them safe by limiting access to harmful means, connecting them with resources such as counselors or support groups, and following up after initial conversations.
“These steps can save lives,” according to the statement from Boyd. The hospital encourages anyone struggling or concerned about someone else to call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, which operates around the clock.
Boyd’s message calls on everyone to remain supportive and hopeful throughout September and beyond: “This month — and every month — let’s commit to being present, offering support, and spreading hope.”
