Chicago Fire FC has announced a significant change to its youth academy structure, moving from the traditional one-year registration model to a three-year commitment for its academy players. This new policy will take effect starting with the 2025–26 season and is aimed at providing greater stability and support for young athletes.

Under the revised system, all new U-13 players joining the Chicago Fire Football Academy will be registered through the end of their U-15 season. If players advance to the senior part of the Academy, they will receive another three-year commitment that covers development until the end of their U-18 season.

Chicago Fire FC Academy Director Gary Lewis explained the rationale behind this shift: “This isn’t just about soccer. This is about creating the right environment for young athletes to grow, learn, and feel secure. By committing to our players for multiple years, we’re taking away the anxiety of yearly renewals and giving them the time and stability they need to truly thrive.”

The club’s new approach moves away from annual assessments and uncertain renewals common in U.S. youth soccer. The intention is to reduce stress among players who often face concerns about being released each year. The program also considers various aspects of player development—including physical, psychological, technical, and social factors—and aligns evaluation periods with important developmental stages such as transitions in gameplay format and academic milestones.

Lewis added: “With this new structure, we are creating an environment where our staff can get the balance right between challenge and support. We’re building a stronger, healthier foundation for long-term success, both on and off the field.”

The Chicago Fire FC Academy describes itself as one of the leading youth development programs in the country. In 2025, Chicago Fire FC provided more playing time to U-22 players and home-grown talent than any other Major League Soccer club. The academy remains fully funded so that talented players can participate regardless of their background.
