Chicago’s 40th Ward has recently been at the center of controversy involving Alderman Andre Vasquez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and former battle rapper. The incident began when Chicago Police responded to a report at Vasquez’s office on North Western Avenue, where they found a dead rat accompanied by a note with anti-immigrant language referencing ICE.
The event prompted media attention as Vasquez highlighted the issue publicly. Despite physical evidence and available surveillance footage, no suspect has been identified in connection with the incident.
Vasquez later participated in a protest outside an ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois—outside his ward and even beyond city limits. During the demonstration, federal officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets, and tear gas to disperse protesters who were blocking enforcement vans. While several demonstrators were detained, Vasquez was not arrested.
Critics argue that Vasquez’s focus on activism detracts from addressing local issues such as crime rates, property taxes, and infrastructure within the 40th Ward. His role as chair of the Committee on Immigrant and Refugee Rights is seen by some as more symbolic than practical since it does not have authority over federal immigration policy.
The situation has raised questions about representation and priorities for elected officials in Chicago’s wards.
