The Commission on Chicago Landmarks has put forward a proposal to designate the Bankers Building in downtown Chicago as an official city landmark. The proposal was introduced to the City Council and is part of ongoing efforts to preserve significant architectural sites in the city.

Also known as the Clark Adams Building, the structure was designed by Burnham Brothers and completed in 1927. At 476 feet tall, it was the tallest building in Chicago’s financial district when it opened.

The proposed landmark status comes alongside Primera Group Inc.’s plan for a $183.5 million adaptive reuse project at the site. This project aims to convert about 400,000 square feet of unused office space into 400 mixed-income residential units and commercial areas that will serve local neighborhoods. The development had previously secured $67.5 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) through the City’s Loop Revitalization Initiative.

According to officials, if approved, landmark designation would protect all exterior elevations of the Bankers Building.
