The Marion High School girls soccer team opened their season with a narrow win over Mascoutah in the first game of the Metro Cup Tournament at Columbia High School on Monday.
The Lady Wildcats and Indians were scoreless after the first half and 10 minutes into the second before Marion's Marissa Basi put the Lady Wildcats on the board with a goal. Mascoutah battled back and tied the game on a direct kick a few minutes later, but as the clock wound down, it was the Lady Wildcats who came through in the clutch.
Nicole Szidik put one in with three minutes left to play, and Marion ran out the rest of the clock to take a 2-1 win.
The Lady Wildcats finished 6-3 last year and hope to have another competitive season in 2017.
